Hungarian PM Condemns Paris Olympic Opening as Symbol of Western Decline

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban condemned the opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, calling it a display of "the weakness and disintegration of the West," as reported by La Depeche.

The politician believes the event, which sparked a fierce public backlash, embodies the Western void.

"They have gradually shed metaphysical ties, with God, country, and family," Orban said.

He added that this has led to "the absence of public morality, as you could see if you watched the opening ceremony of the Olympics yesterday."

Orban also pointed out that the collective West denies the existence of nation states, resulting in the absence of a common culture and a common morality based on it.

"Western values, long considered universal, are increasingly considered unacceptable and rejected by many countries in the world," he concluded.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has removed a video of the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics from its YouTube channel. IOC and Paris 2024 organizers faced massive global public backlash over an alleged LGBTQ-themed parody of ‘The Last Supper’, which was widely seen by many as blasphemous.

Paris Olympics organizers apologized Sunday to anyone who was offended by a tableau that evoked Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper” during the woke opening ceremony.

Followers of different religions from around the world decried the segment, with the French Catholic Church’s conference of bishops deploring “scenes of derision” that they said made a mockery of Christianity — a sentiment echoed by Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova. The Anglican Communion in Egypt expressed its “deep regret” Sunday, saying the ceremony could cause the IOC to “lose its distinctive sporting identity and its humanitarian message.”
