Hezbollah Lauds Election of Yahya Sinwar as Hamas Political Leader

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Lebanese Hezbollah resistance movement commended the election of Yahya Sinwar as the new political leader of Hamas, asserting it demonstrates Israel's failure to eliminate the group's leadership.

Hezbollah stated on Wednesday that Sinwar's appointment illustrates the failure of Israel's attempts to assassinate the leaders of the resistance group.

Sinwar succeeded Ismail Haniyeh, who was assassinated in Tehran in an attack attributed to Israel.

Hezbollah emphasized that Sinwar's election sends a strong message to Israel, the United States, and their allies.

It signifies that Hamas is united in its decisions, solid in its principles, and determined to continue its path of resistance.

Hezbollah further noted that the timing of Sinwar's election, amid ongoing Israeli war, reinforces the resolve of Palestinians and regional countries.

It called for unified efforts to continue resistance until the complete liberation of Palestine.

On Tuesday, Hamas announced Sinwar's selection as head of its political bureau, succeeding Haniyeh.

Haniyeh was assassinated on July 31 in Tehran, where he had attended the swearing-in ceremony of Iran's new president, Masoud Pezeshkian.

Haniyeh was the second senior Hamas leader assassinated by Israel since Al-Aqsa Storm operation on October 7, 2023.

Earlier, Salah al-Arouri was assassinated in southern Beirut on January 2.

Sinwar, a high-ranking Hamas military commander, became the leader of Hamas in Gaza in February 2017, succeeding Haniyeh.

He was a key architect of Al-Aqsa Storm operation, which Hamas launched in response to Israel's long-term oppression of Palestinians.

Sinwar, 61, is a top target for Israel, which reportedly placed a $400,000 bounty on his head following the October 7 operation.
