Constructing Shalamcheh-Basra Railway Underway with Good Progress

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The chief executive of the Islamic Republic of Iran Railways (RAI) said the construction operation of the Shalamcheh-Basra Railway project is currently underway with considerable physical progress.

Miad Salehi, who is also the deputy minister of roads and urban development, made the remarks after visiting the Shalamcheh Border Crossing and also Iraq’s Basra city, according to Mehr news agency.

In a post on his X account on Tuesday, Salehi wrote, “I visited the Shalamcheh-Basra Border Crossing again during Arbaeen rituals and was briefed on the physical progress of the construction operation of this railway project. In this visit, I was accompanied by the CEO of the Iraqi Railway Company.”

The construction operation of the Shalamcheh-Basra Railway started in September 2023 at the zero border point. The railway, which will be 32 km long, will connect Iran to the Mediterranean (via Iraq, Jordan and Syria).
