Iran Plays Leading Role in ECO: Secretary General


TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Secretary General of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) Asad M. Khan highlighted the significant role of Iran in the Eurasian political and economic intergovernmental organization.

In a meeting in Tehran on Tuesday, Khan and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi discussed the ECO’s role in the region and ways to enhance cooperation among its member states.

Expressing gratitude to Iran for supporting his appointment, the ECO secretary general provided a report on the organization's activities, including preparations for an upcoming high-level meeting of heads of state and foreign ministers.

He also highlighted the pivotal and significant role of Iran in ECO and called for continued support for the regional organization.

For his part, Araqchi congratulated the new ECO secretary general on assuming responsibility, hailed Khan's valuable diplomatic experiences, and expressed confidence that ECO's goals, programs, and initiatives will accelerate under his leadership.

Araqchi also highlighted the vast capacities and resources of ECO member states to strengthen and deepen economic cooperation for the development and progress of the region.

Iran, as the host of the ECO Secretariat and the current chair of the organization, strongly supports ECO's programs and activities in achieving its objectives, the foreign minister stated.

Khan, a senior Pakistani diplomat, has been appointed as the secretary general of ECO for a three-year term.
