Generals Consider Iran-Russia Joint Maritime Patrols

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian and Russian military commanders weighed plans for closer naval cooperation between the two countries with joint maritime patrols in the Caspian Sea and in Iran’s southern waters.

In a meeting with Russian Deputy Minister of Defense Alexander Fomin, held on the sidelines of the 11th Beijing Xiangshan Forum in China, Deputy Chief of the Iranian Army for Coordination Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari described the Caspian Sea as the sea of peace and friendship.

The Iranian general also stressed the need for the Caspian littoral states to join hands to ensure collective security without the presence of outsiders.

The two officials further discussed plans to expand naval cooperation between Iran and Russia in the Caspian and southern waters, such as through joint maritime patrols and holding joint naval exercises.

They also talked about ways to protect the strategic interests of the two nations in the implementation of the North-South Corridor.

The 11th Beijing Xiangshan Forum was held at the Beijing International Convention Center from September 12 to 14.

The theme of this year’s forum was “Promoting Peace for a Shared Future”.

Participants in the forum discussed the role of the Global South countries in international security, improving international security mechanisms, maintaining peace and development in the Asia-Pacific region, and achieving a balanced and orderly multipolar world.
