Iran Condemns Terrorist Attack near Karachi Airport

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry strongly condemned a deadly terrorist attack near the international airport in the Pakistani port city of Karachi.

In a statement on Monday night, Esmaeil Baqaei condemned the terrorist attack that has killed and injured a number of Pakistani and Chinese citizens.

He also offered his condolences to the families of victims and the governments of Pakistan and China.

Condemning all forms of terrorism as a violation of the international law and human rights, the spokesman said the fight against terrorism requires cooperation and coordination among all countries.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran is prepared to strengthen cooperation with all countries, specifically the neighbors, to prevent and counter the spread of terrorism and insecurity in the region,” Baqaei said.

The Chinese embassy in Pakistan said at least two of its citizens were killed and a third injured after their convoy was attacked near Karachi airport.

The embassy said the attack took place at about 11 pm on Sunday close to the Jinnah international airport and targeted the Chinese staff of the Port Qasim Electric Power Company.

Pakistani media reported that at least 10 people were injured.

In a statement emailed to journalists earlier, the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) armed group said it was behind the attack, which involved an improvised explosive device (IED).

The BLA wants independence for Balochistan and is part of a broader rebellion in Pakistan’s largest and least-populated province, which borders Iran and Afghanistan.
