Iran Expresses Solidarity with Cuba, Condemns US Sanctions
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry condemned the US sanctions against Cuba, expressing Tehran’s solidarity with Cubans in their struggle for sovereignty.
In a post on his X account on Thursday night, Esmaeil Baqaei hailed the overwhelming adoption of a resolution by the United Nations General Assembly that has called on the US to end the economic, commercial, and financial embargo against Cuba.
“UNGA overwhelmingly condemned US unilateral coercive measures against Cuba for a 32nd year; 187 States supported the call for ending economic embargo on Cuba. Only Israeli regime (and US) opposed that resolution,” the Iranian spokesperson said.
“We stand in solidarity with Cuba in their long-standing struggle for their sovereignty, freedom and dignity,” Baqaei added.
The General Assembly on Thursday reiterated its call on the United States to end its economic, commercial and financial embargo against Cuba, as Cuba’s Minister for Foreign Affairs called the blockade against his government “commercial warfare” and “a crime of genocide”.
The 193-member Assembly adopted its annual resolution on the “Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States of America against Cuba”, by a recorded vote of 187 in favor and 2 against (United States, Israel), with 1 abstention (Republic of Moldova).
Though non-binding, the result drew attention the relative isolation of the US regarding the embargo, which was first imposed in 1960 after former leader Fidel Castro came to power following the revolution.
The resolution reaffirmed, among other principles, the sovereign equality of States, non-intervention and non-interference in their internal affairs and freedom of international trade and navigation.
