SCO Embraces Iran’s Initiatives

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The secretary general of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) welcomed the initiatives proposed by Iran for the promotion of the organization’s economic activities.

In a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, held in Beijing on Saturday, SCO Secretary General Nurlan Yermekbayev hailed Iran’s full membership in the Eurasian organization.

He said Iran has significant capacities that can strengthen the SCO’s role and function.

Yermekbayev also welcomed the initiatives proposed by Iran for the expansion of the SCO’s economic, banking and commercial activities.

For his part, Araqchi highlighted the role of the SCO is advancing multilateralism and fulfilling the security and political interest of the member states.

Given that the SCO includes a group of influential countries, such as two permanent members of the UN Security Council with big economies and several major regional actors, it can play an effective role in the elevation of multilateralism and strengthening cooperation among the members in the economic, political and security spheres, Araqchi added.
