Iran to Keep Up Efforts for An End to Israeli War on Gaza: FM
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian vowed the country’s continued efforts aimed at bringing an end to the Israeli regime’s crimes in the war on Gaza.
Speaking in a telephone conversation with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, Amirabdollahian said the Islamic Republic would keep striving for the establishment of sustainable stability and security in the region and the termination of the Israeli crimes in the Gaza Strip.
He warned that if the United States fails to exert pressure on the Israeli prime minister to accept a truce deal and continues to appease the regime as it commits new crimes in Rafah, southern Gaza, the consequences would be hard on the supporters of the war.
He said the Zionist regime, in continuation of its “policy of terror and genocide” is now trying to cause another humanitarian catastrophe and thwart international initiatives for terminating the war by shutting down the Rafah Border Crossing.
It is now upon Washington to choose between exerting pressure on Israel to stop the war or seeing the region enter a new and different level of crisis and tension, he stated.
The Iranian top diplomat reiterated Iran’s support for the Hamas resistance movement’s response to a ceasefire proposal and briefed Guterres on his recent consultations with his counterparts from Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt as well as Hamas Political Bureau Chief Ismail Haniyeh.
He further hailed the UN chief’s efforts to end the Israeli war and genocide in Gaza and called for a greater role of the UN on the issue of Palestine.
Guterres, for his part, appreciated Iran’s wise stances and measures to boost peace and security in the region.
He also said that from the beginning, the UN has taken a firm stance on the need for a ceasefire and an end to the war.
He said the UN will continue its consultations with the US and other countries on the importance of an immediate ceasefire and reopening of the Rafah Border Crossing.
Guterres called on all sides to concentrate on halting the war and bloodshed.
At least 34,844 people have been killed and 78,404 wounded in Israeli attacks on Gaza since October 7, 2023.
