US Approach to Syria Paradoxical: Iranian General

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces said the US push for the overthrow of Syria’s legitimate President Bashar al-Assad only invigorates the ISIL terrorist group, recommending Washington to put aside such a paradoxical approach if it really wants to fight terrorism.

The Americans should know that if Syria lacks a ruling government and if they oppose and attack Bashar al-Assad, they will only strengthen Daesh, and this is a strategic paradox, Major General Hassan Firouzabadi said on Saturday, using an Arabic acronym for the ISIL terrorist group.

It is unacceptable to stage a war on ISIL and at the same time attack a president who is battling terrorism in Syria, the top officer said of the US approach.

“The Americans should stop their wrong, paradoxical policy so that the fight on terrorists in Syria can go on in favor of the world peace and security,” Major General Firouzabadi added.

Commenting on a Friday resolution passed by the United Nations Security Council on a global fight against ISIL, Firouzabadi said the recent terrorist attacks in Paris finally “awakened the West” and made them aware of Iran’s previous warnings that the scourge of terrorism is not confined to a specific region but it threatens the whole world.

In a unanimously adopted resolution, the 15-member UNSC declared the ISIL’s terrorist attacks abroad “a global and unprecedented threat to international peace and security” following the “horrifying terrorist attacks” it perpetrated recently in Sousse (Tunisia), Ankara (Turkey), over Sinai (Egypt) with the downing of a Russian plane, and in Beirut and Paris.

On November 13, a string of coordinated attacks in and around the French capital left at least 132 people dead and some 200 others injured.

A state of emergency has been declared in the European country shaken by the horrific attacks claimed by ISIL.
