Syrian Army Retakes Maydaa from Terrorists in Eastern Ghouta
DAMASCUS (Tasnim) – The Syrian army, backed by volunteer forces and military advisers, fully liberated the town of Maydaa in the Eastern Ghouta area, east of Damascus, from the clutches of Takfiri militants.
According to Tasnim dispatches, Syrian forces on Saturday made major gains in their military campaign against the so-called Jaish al Islam terrorist group and managed to recapture Maydaa after delivering severe blows to them.
The Syrian soldiers were supported by the Air Force all through the operation, during which large groups of the terrorists were killed and a number of their tunnels destroyed.
It came after the militants violated a three-day cease-fire declared by the Syrian military for the entire country on Wednesday.
The announcement came at the start of the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr that marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan.
It was the first truce since a US-Russia-brokered "cessation of hostilities" came into effect on Feb. 27.
Syria has been gripped by foreign-backed militancy since March 2011. UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura estimates that over 400,000 people have been killed in the conflict, which has furthermore displaced over half of Syria’s pre-war population of about 23 million.
