Removing Assad from Power Leads to More Instability: Egyptian Analyst
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – While some western and Arab countries are helping the rebels in Syria to overthrow Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, an Egyptian analyst said removing Assad would be difficult and disastrous for the region.
“Despite efforts by US to topple Syrian government, I believe Bashar Assad’s political system would remain in power. Strong opposition to the US plan to use force against Syria, and lack of support for it forced the White House to go along with the Russian proposal to get rid of Syria's chemical weapons," Ali Abol Khair told Tasnim News Agency.
The former editor in chief of Egypt’s Al-Anwar daily referred to the US president’s recent comments that if Assad would remain in power solving the Syrian crisis would be impossible, arguing, “Removing Bashar Assad from power is difficult; it will also lead to more violence and instability in the Middle East and all regional countries will suffer as a result."
He warned against US schemes for the region and said that Washington is after disintegration of regional countries.
Referring to broad international opposition to US military intervention in Syria, he said, “Today the regional and trans-regional powers are resisting against the US policies. The support of Russia and the resistance front for Bashar Assad’s system against the military threats of the White House is just a case in point."
Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since March 2011.
A very large number of the militants operating inside Syria are mercenaries from other countries who are armed and financially supported by some western powers and their regional allies, especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey.
