Iran Reiterates Call for Concerted Efforts to Stem Terrorism, Extremism

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Iranian President Hassan Rouhani warned against the spread of terrorism in the region, and once again urged the neighboring countries to forge closer cooperation to tackle the menace of extremist and terrorist moves.

“We are in conditions that all of us are suffering from extremism and violence. Terrorism is like a microbe that spreads to the other regions,” President Rouhani said in a quadripartite meeting with his counterparts from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Tajikistan, on the sidelines of the 5th International Nowruz Festival, in Kabul on Thursday.

The Iranian president also called for serious action by the neighboring states against terrorism, and noted, “Any inaction on the fight against terrorism or negligence in stopping the others from providing the terrorist groups with the financial and military supports will cause that ominous phenomenon (terrorism) spread in the region.”

He further emphasized the need for collaborative work by Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Tajikistan to coordinate efforts in tackling the extremist moves across the region.

The Iranian president’s emphasis on the initiatives for peace and security comes after the UN General Assembly on December 18 approved his proposal for a World against Violence and Extremism (WAVE).

Wave Act asks the United Nations member states to unite against extremism, violence and sectarian conflicts in all their forms.

The resolution, which received overwhelming approval in the global body, also necessitates “appropriate measures to strengthen universal peace and to achieve international cooperation in solving international problems of an economic, social, cultural, or humanitarian character.”
