IRCS: Iran Ready to Send Humanitarian Aid to Flood-Struck Serbia

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Head of the Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) Seyed Ahmad Mousavi extended Tehran's condolences to the Serbian people over the deadly floods hitting the Balkan country, saying that Iran is ready to send humanitarian aid to the affected areas.

In a Monday meeting with Serbian Ambassador to Iran Aleksandar Tasic, Mousavi expressed the hope that mutual cooperation in this regard would strengthen ties between the Iranian and Serbian nations.

“Through utilizing the two nations’ capacities major steps can be taken to relieve human suffering.” said the Iranian official.

Mousavi further emphasized that Iran’s humanitarian aid will be sent to Serbia as soon as possible, and hoped that “humanitarian interactions” between the two countries would be increased in the future.

The Serbian ambassador for his part, briefed Mousavi on the disastrous situation in his country.  Tasic emphasized that a large number of people have lost their homes and are in dire need of assistance.

 

 

Record rainfall has caused catastrophic floods in Bosnia, Serbia and parts of Croatia, killing at least 47 people. More than one-quarter of Bosnia’s four million people have been affected. Some 2,100 landslides were set off in Bosnia by the heavy rainfall, while Serbia documented approximately 1,000.

Serbian Interior Minister Nebojsa Stefanovic has announced an urgent and complete evacuation of the Serbian town of Obrenovac, located some 30 kilometers from Belgrade.
