Iran Invited to Monitor Syria’s Presidential Elections

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Syria has invited the Islamic Republic of Iran to monitor the upcoming presidential election in the country, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham announced on Tuesday.

The plan to observe the election is on Tehran’s agenda and as soon as any decision is made, it will be announced, Afkham told reporters in her weekly press conference in Tehran on Tuesday.

Syria’s presidential election is slated to be held on June 3 and the three candidates, Bashar al-Assad, Maher Abdel Hafiz Hajjar and Hassan Abdullah al-Nuri, have launched their election campaign from May 11.

Iranian foreign ministry spokeswoman further emphasized that Tehran’s stance on the Syrian crisis from the very beginning was based on “a political and Syrian-Syrian solution.”

“Some countries’ support for the opposition groups and the continuation of measures that are contrary to the will of the Syrian nation will get nowhere,” she stated.

Considering the will of Syrian people as well as the realities on the ground in the country are key to securing a sustainable political solution, said the Iranian foreign ministry spokeswoman.

Syria has been gripped by a deadly unrest since 2011. The UN says more than 130,000 people have been killed since the beginning of the unrest in 2011. More than 2.2 million Syrians have fled to neighboring countries while an estimated 4.25 million have been displaced internally.

It recently warned against the humanitarian situation in Syria, saying that over nine million people are in need of urgent aid due to the crisis in the Middle Eastern country.
