Bahraini Forces Attack Protesters in Several Towns

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Fresh clashes erupted in Bahrain between security forces and anti-regime protesters in several towns as the ruling Al Khalifa regime continues its heavy-handed crackdown on political dissent.

According to reports, Bahraini security guards fired tear gas to disperse the demonstrators who were holding an anti-regime protest rally in the Ras Rumman neighborhood of the capital, Manama, on Thursday.

Similar clashes broke out in Bahrain’s northeastern island of Sitra and the western village of Shahrakan, where protesters called for the downfall of the Al Khalifa regime.

Earlier this week, Bahraini riot police killed an anti-regime protester, who was identified as Seyyed Mahmoud Seyyed Mohsen, during violent skirmishes that broke out in Sitra.

Over the past years, Bahrain’s human rights record has come under scrutiny over its handling of the anti-regime protests in the Persian Gulf country, Press TV reported.

Since mid-February 2011, thousands of anti-regime protesters have held numerous demonstrations in the streets of Bahrain, calling for the Al Khalifa family to relinquish power. Scores of people have been killed and hundreds of others injured and arrested in the Manama regime’s ongoing crackdown on peaceful demonstrations.

On May 19, Amnesty International issued a statement, voicing concern over the lack of judiciary reform in Bahrain and severe clampdown on anti-regime protesters.
