Iranian Commander Terms Syria Presidential Elections Major Setback for Rebels
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The anti-government terrorists’ influence has begun to wane dramatically in Syria, an obvious sign of which is that Syrians have adopted a forceful approach to hold the presidential elections, a senior commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) said.
IRGC Deputy Commander Brigadier General Hossein Salami said on Wednesday that a general assessment of the latest developments in Syria clearly demonstrates that President Bashar al-Assad’s legitimate government has succeeded to gain the upper hand in the fight against terrorists.
The balance of power in the Arab country has changed in favor of the Syrian nation, he told reporters on the sidelines of a cultural ceremony in Tehran.
“Preparations have been made for the presidential elections (in Syria) as a political process, signifying a remarkable decline for the terrorists and their supporters' conditions in the field,” Salami explained.
While the Syrian nation is prepared to attend the upcoming presidential votes on June 3, the Syrian military forces have inflicted heavy losses on the foreign-backed militants across the country in different operations.
Syria’s presidential election is slated for June 3 and three candidates, Bashar al-Assad, Maher Abdel Hafiz Hajjar and Hassan Abdullah al-Nuri, have launched their election campaign since May 11.
