World Cup 2014: Chile Defeats Australia
TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Chile national football team started its 2014 FIFA World Cup campaign with a 3-1 victory over Australia.
Alexis Sanchez gave a lead to the South American team after just 12 minutes.
Jorge Valdivia doubled the lead two minutes later at the Arena Pantanal.
New York Red Bulls midfielder Tim Cahill pulled a goal back for Australia with a fine 35th-minute header.
Substitute Jean Beausejour scored Chile’s third goal in stoppage time.
The Netherlands top Group B after a 5-1 victory over Spain. Chile currently occupies second place and will now travel to the Maracana for a showdown with Spain on June 18.
"The ambience really helped the team establish its authority to go after those goals at the beginning," Chile's Argentine coach Jorge Sampaoli told reporters.
