ISIL Serious Threat to Regional Security: Senior Iranian Cleric
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A senior Iranian cleric has raised the alarm over the threats posed by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant terrorist group and called on Iraqi people to get unified in the face of enemies.
"Today the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant is a serious threat to the Muslim World. We express our strong support for the Iraqi nation and they should stand against their enemies through unity and solidarity," said Grand Ayatollah Hossein Nouri Hamedani.
Ayatollah Nouri Hamedani made the remarks in an address to religious scholars in the Iranian northwestern province of East Azarbaijan.
Commenting of the activities of ISIL terrorist group in Syria and Iraq, he said enemies arm the terrorist groups under the umbrella of Iranophobia, and commit genocide against Muslims.
He also described the “full-scale” battle against Shiite Muslims as part of the enemies’ fears over the impression of Iran’s Islamic Revolution.
Ayatollah Nouri Hamedani also said Iran enjoys full security thanks to “the wise leadership” of late Imam Khomeini and the leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei.
On June 10, Iraq’s northern Nineveh Province fell into the hands of militants from the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). The Takfiri (extremist terrorists’) attacks have reportedly forced more than half a million people in and around Mosul, the capital of Nineveh Province, to flee their homes.
Takfiri militants have vowed to march toward the capital, Baghdad.
Takfiri groups reportedly enter Iraq from neighboring Syria and Saudi Arabia to undermine security in the country.
