Iran Calls for Jump in Trade Exchange with Azerbaijan

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s first vice-president said the amicable ties between Tehran and Baku necessitate bigger efforts by both sides to boost the current volume of their trade transactions.

“The low volume of trade exchange (between Iran and Azerbaijan) does not match the friendly and brotherly relations between the two countries, and it is necessary that major strides are made in this regard,” Eshaq Jahangiri said in a meeting with Azeri Minister of Communications and Information Technology Ali Abbasov in Tehran on Wednesday.

Jahangiri then made a reference to Azeri President Ilham Aliyev’s recent visit to Iran, saying his trip marked a new era of Tehran-Baku relations.

The visiting Azeri minister, for his part, admitted that the volume of trade exchange between Iran and Azerbaijan is below expectations, but expressed the hope that an upcoming meeting of the joint commission on economic cooperation between the two sides would help raise that figure.

The next meeting of the joint economic commission between Iran and Azerbaijan is set to be held in August.

"Representatives of various ministries and relevant bodies of Iran and Azerbaijan held their previous meeting on May 3 to prepare the ground for the ninth session of the joint economic commission between two sides," Iran's Ambassador to Azerbaijan Mohsen Pakayeen had told Tasnim in May.
