Iran to Inaugurate New Petrochemical Complex in Mahshahr by 2017
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s National Petrochemical Company (NPC) announced that a petrochemical complex with an annual output of 450,000 tons of propylene will come on stream by March 2017 in the country's Mahshahr Petrochemical Special Economic Zone.
The complex, namely Salman-e-Farsi, is under construction in the southwestern city of Mahshahr with the aim of providing feedstock for the petrochemical industry, including the units of polypropylene, acrylonitrile, etc.
Bandar Imam Petrochemical Company is planned to produce the feedstock of the Salman-e-Farsi complex, which is estimated at 560,000 tons of propane per year.
The construction process of the complex started in 2010 and 11.7 percent of the work has finished up to now.
According to Iran’s Deputy Petroleum Minister for Petrochemical Affairs Abbas Sheri Moqaddam, the country has the capacity to produce 60 million tons of petrochemicals per year, however, only 68 percent of this capacity is tapped on average, due to a variety of reasons, including lack of raw material.
Iran has significantly expanded the range and volume of its petrochemical production over the past few years.
The Islamic Republic, which holds the world’s third-largest proven oil reserves and the largest natural gas reserves, is determined to become the biggest petrochemical producer in the Middle East.
