3 Tons of Narcotics Seized in Southern Iranian Province in One Year
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Police chief of Iran’s southeastern Bushehr province said his forces have confiscated 3000 kilograms of illicit drugs in the past 12 months.
General Heidar Abbaszadeh on Friday said Bushehr province law enforcement forces seized 3 tons of narcotics in the past year, including 1180kg in the past three months alone.
He said the development showed the power of the police in fighting drug-traffickers.
General Abbaszadeh added that 140 drug trafficking rings have also been disbanded by the Bushehr police in the past few months.
He further noted that war on drug trade has claimed the lives of nearly 3700 Iranian police officers so far.
Iran, which has a 900-kilometer common border with Afghanistan, has been used by smugglers as the main conduit to take narcotics to other countries.
Over the past three decades, the country has spent millions of dollars to seal its borders and prevent the transit of narcotics destined for European, Arab and Central Asian countries.
