Ecuadorian Lawmakers Condemn Israeli Gaza Offensive

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Ecuadorian lawmakers condemned Israel's attacks on the Gaza Strip and appealed to the international community to stop further destruction and loss of life in the region.

With 86 votes in favor, the National Assembly on Thursday passed a resolution to "vehemently" condemn the Israeli army's "indiscriminate" attacks against Palestinian civilians.

The lawmakers issued a communique recognizing Palestine's right to defend itself against an "unjustified and disproportionate aggression" and respecting the Palestinian right to self-determination.

The National Assembly also called upon the international community, including the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees, to take urgent steps to deal with the serious humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Xinhua reported.

The warring sides should "cease hostilities and begin a negotiation committed to the recognition of a free, sovereign and independent State of Palestine based on the 1967 borders," the legislators said.

The lawmakers called on the United Nations and the International Criminal Court "to place sanctions on Israel over genocide of the Palestinians."

The total death toll from the Israeli attacks has topped 265, with some 1,800 injured. According to the United Nations, nearly 80 percent of the victims are civilians.
