Iran’s Vice-President Congratulates Election of New Iraqi PM
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s vice president offered his congratulations to Haidar al-Abadi for his election as Iraq’s prime minister.
“Considering the long historical and religious bonds between the two countries, I hope, during your tenure, we will witness increasing consolidation of relations between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Republic of Iraq in line with the interests of the two nations,” said Eshaq Jahangiri in a message to Abadi.
In his message, the Iranian vice president also wished success and prosperity for the Iraqi nation and government.
Iraq’s President Fouad Massoum on August 11 officially commissioned Abadi, the Shiite coalition's nominee for prime minister, to form the next government that could win the support of all groups in a parliament elected in April.
In remarks broadcast on television, Masoum urged Abadi to "form a broader-based government" in a month.
The Arab country’s 8-year premier Nouri al-Maliki stepped down after struggles over the country’s new nomination.
Maliki’s move paved the way for a new coalition that many hope can quash the insurgency that has been threatening Baghdad for months.
