Rouhani, Rahmon Jointly Inaugurate Power Plant in Tajikistan

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and his Tajik counterpart Emomali Rahmon on Wednesday jointly inaugurated Sangtuda 2 Hydroelectric Power Plant.

The Iranian and Tajik presidents inaugurated the hydroelectric dam via video conference after attending a ceremony, in which nine cooperation agreements between the two countries were signed.

Tajikistan President Imomali Rahmon in the ceremony said that the construction of the dam is a symbol of cooperation between the two countries.

Now Iran is the second investor in Tajikistan following China.

The Sangtuda-2 power plant and Esteqlal Tunnel projects are a good example of Iran's major role in the Tajik economy.

The Sangtuda-2 plant is one of the key projects in Tajik energy sector which was built on Vakhsh River in Tajikistan. The plant with the capacity of 220MW electricity generation is scheduled to generate up to 1 billion KWH electricity annually.

The plant is a significant milestone in energy independence for Tajikistan, as the country has been experiencing severe energy shortages since it gained independence in 1991.
