Iran's President: Terrorism & Extremism, A Global Threat
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani described terrorism and extremism as a global threat and urged all countries to act against it.
In a meeting with secretary general of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in Dushanbe, Tajikistan on Thursday, Rouhani said all countries should get united to confront terrorism and extremism, which are a big problem and a threat to the regional and global stability.
He underlined that the existence of terrorist groups is in no one’s interest.
“Fighting terrorism is not an easy, short-term job,” Rouhani further stressed, adding that it requires a firm political decision as well as regional and international cooperation.
Elsewhere in his remarks, the president said his participation in the SCO summit demonstrated Tehran’s willingness to regional stability.
“We’ll do everything in our power for the security of the region”, he reiterated.
Dmitry Fyodorovich Mezentsev, the secretary general of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, for his part, hailed the participation of the Iranian president and his accompanying delegation in the summit.
He added that the organization has made a lot of efforts this year to develop cooperation with countries that have observer status in the SCO.
President Rouhani traveled to Tajikistan for a three-day visit on Wednesday to participate at the summit of the SCO.
The SCO is an intergovernmental organization that was founded in 2001 in Shanghai by the leaders of China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.
Iran, along with four other countries, holds observer status in the organization.
