One Dead, Dozen Injured in Car Attack in Al-Quds
TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Ten people were injured, one critically, after a car rammed pedestrians in Jerusalem (al-Quds) on Wednesday, before the driver was shot dead by police, according to Israeli officials.
"A commercial vehicle hit and ran over pedestrians at a light rail station," Luba Samri, Israel’s police spokeswoman, said, indicating the incident took place on the seam line between west and occupied East Jerusalem (East al-Quds).
After the car came to a halt, the driver, who was wounded, "got out of the vehicle and started to hit people with an iron bar", she said.
He was shot dead by police who were in the area at the time, she added, Al Jazeera reported.
The incident came against the backdrop of continued tensions after Israeli authorities prevented Palestinian worshippers from entering the Al-Aqsa Mosque last week and still continue to construct settlement homes in East al-Quds (Jerusalem).
Israel reopened Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa mosque compound for the Muslim Friday prayers, but restricted entry for Muslim men under the age of 50, following a closure due to clashes sparked by the killing of a Palestinian by police.
The Al-Aqsa Mosque, a holy site at the heart of the clashes, was also shut down for almost an entire day to all visitors.
Al-Quds has been witnessing months of violence with al-Aqsa mosque compound standing as a rallying point for Palestinian resistance to the Israeli attempts to take control of the holy site.
