Iran Sees Israel's Air Raid on Syria as "Support for Terrorists"

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Israel’s recent airstrikes against Syria were part of Tel Aviv's move to support terrorist groups and raise their morale, senior Iranian official said.

Speaking in a meeting with Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem in Tehran on Tuesday evening, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani pointed to Israel’s recent airstrikes against Syria and said the move will not reduce the trend of growing insecurity in Israel.

According to the Syrian military, Israeli planes bombed an area near Damascus international airport and the town of Dimas on Sunday.

As regards the Syrian campaign against terrorist and extremist groups, Shamkhani hailed the historical resistance of Syrian people and government against terrorism, and said the efforts by supporters of terrorist groups to wage war of attrition on Syria are futile.

Shamkhani also criticized the efforts some states have made to create a no-fly or buffer zone in Syrian border regions and added, “Such measures would violate the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity rather than restoring security and relieving the pains of the Syrian nation.”

Muallem, for his part, appreciated the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution and the Iranian nation and government for their brotherly support for the Syrian nation and said that by the Syrian people’s resistance and unity “and the support of friendly countries like Iran, Russia, and Iraq,” terrorism can be eradicated from the Middle East.
