Iran Blames Foreign Meddling for Rise of Terrorism in Syria, Iraq
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian parliament speaker referred to foreign interference as the factor behind the rise of terrorist activities in the region, Iraq and Syria in particular.
“Foreign interference gave rise to spread of terrorism in Syria and Iraq and previously in Afghanistan,” Ali Larijani said Sunday in a joint press conference with his Syrian counterpart.
Larijani also noted that he discussed major regional issues in his meeting with Syria’s Parliament Speaker Mohammed Jihad al-Laham, and said their talks centered on the fight against terrorism “which is a threat to the entire region”.
He further referred to the ongoing crisis in Syria and said while some countries, including Iran, call for political solution to the conflict, there are others that continue to oppose such a solution.
Larijani is on an official visit to Damascus leading a delegation of senior political officials including Chairman of the Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi and Deputy Foreign Minister for African and Middle Eastern Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian.
He is also scheduled to visit Lebanon and Iraq during his 4-day regional tour.
Prior to his departure, Larijani had told reporters at Tehran’s Mehrabad Airport that regional, security and parliamentary issues will be on his agenda during his meetings with Syrian, Lebanese and Iraqi officials.
