Improving Economic Cooperation Top on Iran, Iraq's Agenda: Official

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani said the improvement of economic cooperation sets a priority for Tehran-Baghdad ties, and stressed that Iran will assist Iraq's reconstruction.

The expansion of all-out cooperation, especially on infrastructure fields, road, rail, water, and air transportation is agreed upon by both sides, Shamkhani said in a meeting with Baqir Jabr al-Zubeidi, the visiting Iraqi minister of transportation, here in Tehran on Wednesday.

Shamkhani also announced that Iran will help in rebuilding the terrorism-torn country.

Shamkhani asserted that the age-old and cultural relations, long shared borders and the existance of Shiite holy shrines in Iraq have deepened the strong bonds between the two neighboring states.

Al-Zubeidi, for his part, emphasized the new Iraqi government’s strategy to expand ties with neighboring countries, and said that the Arab country is interested in closer cooperation with Iran.

The Iraqi official referred to the progress made in the Iran-Iraq railway project, and said the  development of joint transportation projects will play key role in flourishing the two countries' economic interactions.
