Iran Earns First Victory in World Handball Championship
TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Iranian national handball team defeated Chile on Monday to record its first ever win in a World Championship.
The Iranian team beat the South American team 32:31 in the first day of President’s Cup matches.
Though Iran took the win, Chilean right back Rodrigo Salinas recorded one of the highest ever goal tallies at a World Championship, hitting the back of the net 18 times in the game.
Alireza Mousavai, Allahkaram Esteki and Jalal Kiani scored five times each.
“This is a great day for handball in Iran. This match was a great experience for us and I hope our young team can profit from this win and the whole tournament. I hope a lot of my teammates will get the chance to sign for European clubs and gain more experience,” said Iranian left wing, Ehsan Abouei Mehrizi after the game.
Salinas was named the Man of the Match .
Iran now play the winner of the Algeria-Saudi Arabia match for 20th place on the ranking tomorrow.
