Iran’s Parliament to Discuss Bill on Safeguarding Nuclear Rights

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian lawmakers on Tuesday voted in favor of the urgency of discussing a proposal that will oblige the administration to protect the country’s rights and achievements in the field of peaceful nuclear energy.

During an open session of the parliament on Tuesday, the legislators approved the single-urgency of considering the proposed bill that will oblige the Iranian administration to take necessary measures to safeguard the Iranian nation’s nuclear rights.

According to the bill, if any new sanctions are imposed on Tehran by the United States, President Hassan Rouhani’s administration will be required to activate nuclear enrichment facilities in accordance with Article 4 of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) without putting any restrictions on the type or number of centrifuges or the scope of enrichment.

The administration will also be required to reject any inspections of Iran’s nuclear facilities and any cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) beyond NPT Safeguards in order to protect the country’s national security and interests.

The bill came a week after more than 80 lawmakers signed a motion entailing the country’s harsh reaction, including the annulment of the Geneva interim nuclear deal, in case new sanctions are imposed on the country while nuclear negotiations are in progress.

Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) are in talks to hammer out a final agreement to end more than a decade of impasse over Tehran’s nuclear energy program.

The two sides on November 24, 2013, signed an interim nuclear deal in the Swiss city of Geneva.

Based on the interim accord (the Joint Plan of Action), the world powers agreed to suspend some non-essential sanctions and to impose no new nuclear-related bans in return for Tehran's decision to freeze parts of its nuclear activities.

Following the interim nuclear, two deadlines for a final, comprehensive deal have been missed, and now a third one is looming on July 1.

However, the US imposed several sanctions on many Iranian nationals and companies afterwards, accusing them of violating previous anti-Iran sanctions.
