Iraqi People Fighting ISIL on Behalf of World: Iran’s First VP
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian First Vice President Eshaq Jahangiri hailed Iraqi people’s resistance against the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) terrorist group, urging the world to support the Arab country.
“The Iraqi people are actually fighting ISIL on behalf of all of the world's people,” Jahangiri said, stressing that all countries should support the people of Iraq in this battle.
He made the remarks in a Tuesday meeting with Head of the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq Ammar al-Hakim.
The Iranian first VP described ISIL as a dangerous phenomenon, saying that the terrorist group is seeking to tarnish the image of Islam and portray it as violent.
He further highlighted the role of Shiite leadership in the fight against ISIL, and said that everyone witnessed how religious decrees (Fatwas) issued by religious leaders could mobilize people against the terrorist group.
Al-Hakim, for his part, hailed Iran’s “special and significant” role in supporting Iraq, and underscored the necessity for further expansion of bilateral relations.
Heading a high-ranking delegation comprised of 5 ministers and 2 vice presidents, Jahangiri started a three-day tour of Iraq on Monday at the invitation of Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi.
