Iranian Deputy FM to Meet IAEA Chief in Vienna
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Seyed Abbas Araqchi plans to meet with Yukiya Amano, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), next week.
Araqchi will leave for the Austrian capital of Vienna on Tuesday to hold talks with the IAEA chief on Iran’s nuclear issue.
The two will discuss the Islamic Republic’s current and future cooperation with the UN nuclear agency.
The IAEA has frequently confirmed that the country has carried out the whole measures it promised to undertake voluntarily under the Joint Plan of Action.
On November 24, 2013, Iran and the Group 5+1 (the US, Russia, France, Britain and China plus Germany), signed a six-month deal on Tehran’s nuclear program in the Swiss city of Geneva.
The Geneva deal (the Joint Plan of Action) came into effect in January 2014 and expired in July, when the parties decided to extend negotiations until November 24 in the hope of clinching a final deal that would end a decade of impasse over Tehran’s peaceful nuclear energy program.
After failing to hammer out a lasting accord by the self-imposed November 24 deadline, the parties once again decided to extend the deadline for seven more months.
Negotiations between Iran and the sextet are scheduled to resume in the Swiss city of Geneva on Friday with a bilateral meeting between deputy foreign ministers from Iran and the US.
Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and US Secretary of State John Kerry will also join the negotiations on Sunday and Monday.
