IAEA Confirms Iran’s Commitment to Geneva Nuclear Deal

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - The latest report by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) states that Iran has remained committed to a nuclear deal it signed with six major world powers in Geneva in November 2013.

According to a confidential United Nations nuclear agency report seen by Reuters on Monday, Tehran is sticking to the interim nuclear deal reached in Switzerland in November 2013.

The monthly update by the IAEA said Iran was not enriching uranium above a fissile concentration of 5 percent. It also said Iran had not made "any further advances" in its activities at two enrichment facilities and a heavy water reactor under construction.

The report came a few days after delegates from Iran and the IAEA held a one-day meeting in Tehran on Wednesday in a bid to resolve the remaining issues regarding Tehran's nuclear energy program.

In the meeting, some solutions were found regarding complicated issues remaining from previous years, but the alleged use of "high explosives" in Iran's western Marivan region and information on "neutron calculations" are the topics that still need further discussions in the next meeting.

On November 24, 2013, Iran and the Group 5+1 (the US, Russia, France, Britain and China plus Germany), signed a six-month deal on Tehran’s nuclear program in the Swiss city of Geneva.

Based on the interim deal (the Joint Plan of Action), the world powers agreed to suspend some non-essential sanctions and to impose no new nuclear-related bans in return for Tehran's decision to suspend some of its nuclear activities.

The pact was negotiated to buy time for talks on a final settlement of a dispute over the nature of Iran’s nuclear program, which Tehran has always reassured is peaceful.

After reaching a framework agreement in marathon talks in Switzerland earlier this month, the parties are trying to nail down the details of a final settlement by the end of June. The next round of talks starts this week in Vienna.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, US Under-Secretary of State Wendy Sherman, and European Union Political Director Helga Schmid will conduct this session of talks.
