Iran Calls for Further Int’l Pressure on Riyadh to End Yemen War

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham called on international bodies to increase their pressure on the Saudi-led coalition in a bid to end the ongoing attacks against Yemen and facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to the war-hit country.

Afkham on Tuesday described the humanitarian situation in Yemen as “disastrous”, and regretted that the Saudi-led coalition has not shown a positive respond to the request of UN Secretary General and other international bodies for the extension of ceasefire.

“Unfortunately, the coalition not only caused troubles in the course of delivering humanitarian aid to Yemen even during the five-day ceasefire, but also repeatedly violated the ceasefire and targeted the innocent and defenseless people of Yemen through airstrikes,” she stressed.

She went on to say that the continuous bombardment of different regions in Yemen within the past two months has resulted in a very adverse situation, and “millions of children, old and young people in Yemen are in dire need of immediate medical, pharmaceutical, and food assistance.”

Afkham once again asked international authorities to increase their pressure on the anti-Yemen coalition and seriously pursue the cessation of attacks and provision of a safe route for delivering humanitarian aid to the Arab country under the supervision of international bodies.

Tehran has tried three times to send humanitarian aid to Yemen, but Saudi fighter jets have refused aid planes landing in Sana'a airport.

However, Iran dispatched a cargo ship carrying humanitarian assistance to Yemeni port of Hodeida on May 11, which is due to arrive at the war-torn country on May 21.
