Syria, Iran Determined to Eradicate Terrorism in Region: Syrian Minister
TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Syrian Interior Minister Mohammad Ibrahim al-Shaar said his country is working in close cooperation with Iran to "nip terrorism in the bud" across the Middle East.
Syria and the Islamic Republic of Iran are "striving together… to nip terrorism in the bud in the region," Shaar told reporters in Tehran on Tuesday.
The Syrian minister arrived in Tehran on Sunday and has held several meetings with ranking Iranian officials.
Among the main issues that Tehran and Damascus have quite identical views is the fight against terrorism, Shaar said, stressing that terrorism poses a threat not only to Syria, but also to the region and the world.
Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with Takfiri terrorists from the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) currently controlling parts of it, mostly in the east.
According to the United Nations, more than 220,000 people have been killed and one million wounded during the conflict.
In the meantime, Iran has remained a close ally of Syria and supports its legitimate government in the face of foreign-backed militancy.
