Iran's Daily Gas Output from South Pars Hits 440mln Cubic Meters
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The volume of natural gas produced per day in Iran's South Pars gas field has reached 440 million cubic meters (mcm), a senior gas official announced on Saturday.
Iran's production of natural gas has jumped by 35 percent over the past one and a half years, Managing-director of Pars Special Economic Energy Zone (PSEEZ) Mahdi Yousefi said.
"Currently, 440 mcm of gas is extracted from South Pars gas field per day," he said, adding that the figure is expected to rise to 800 mcm.
Iran holds 8 percent of the world's gas reserves in its South Pars field alone, Yousefi noted.
According to the 64th Edition of the BP Statistical Review of World Energy released in June, Iran is the world's top gas reserves holder with 33.8 trillion cubic meters.
The South Pars gas field, whose development has been divided into 28 phases, is located in the Persian Gulf straddling the maritime border between Iran and Qatar. It is estimated that the Iranian section of the field contains 14 trillion cubic meters of gas and 18 billion barrels of condensates in place.
South Pars is part of a wider gas field that is shared with Qatar. The larger field covers an area of 9,700 square kilometers, 3,700 square kilometers of which are in Iran's territorial waters (South Pars) in the Persian Gulf. The remaining 6,000 square kilometers, referred to as the North Dome, are in Qatar's territorial waters.
