President: Iran's Stronger Position after Nuclear Deal to Be to No One's Detriment
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani gave an assurance on Wednesday that the country's strengthened regional position following a final nuclear deal with world powers should never cause concern for neighbors.
Addressing a Wednesday session of the cabinet, President Rouhani hailed the recent conclusion of diplomatic talks with the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) on Iran's nuclear program as a "great success" for the country.
He explained that a final comprehensive nuclear deal would open up new vistas for economic growth, enhanced cultural and political relations with other countries and Iran's "empowerment in the military and defense spheres".
Rouhani stressed that such progress will "undoubtedly" strengthen Iran’s position in the region.
"But this will not be to the detriment of any of the neighbors and Muslim countries," he underlined.
"It is an illusion that if Iran gains power, it will thus interfere in the internal affairs of others. We deem interference as inappropriate and wrong, and believe that the affairs of every country should be handled by its own people," President Rouhani stated.
He, however, reaffirmed Iran's support for the "oppressed" nations and further pledged that Tehran will do its utmost in the fight against terrorism, a threat to the region and the world.
His comments came after Iran and the Group 5+1 (also known as the P5+1 or E3+3) on July 14 reached a conclusion on a lasting nuclear agreement, dubbed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
After months of diplomatic talks, the negotiating parties could finalize the text of a deal that would terminate all sanctions imposed on Iran over its nuclear energy program after coming into force.
