Al-Wefaq Slams Bahraini Regime for Making False Allegations against Opposition Figure
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Bahrain’s main opposition bloc, al-Wefaq National Islamic Society, dismissed as unfounded the accusations leveled against jailed cleric and former MP Sheikh Hassan Isa by the Al Khalifa regime.
In a statement on Monday, al-Wefaq condemned the Manama regime for detaining Sheikh Isa and emphasized that the measures taken against the prominent cleric are in violation of both domestic and international laws.
Sheikh Isa is a supporter of the peaceful protests in Bahrain and accusing him of supporting terrorism is an unfounded and untrue claim, the statement read.
The top cleric was arrested by Al Khalifa regime’s security forces on August 18.
Sheikh Isa’s lawyer has been prevented from attending his interrogation, communicating with him and reading the lawsuit papers.
The arrest indicates an intensified targeting of clerics and political, social and religious activists in Bahrain, Al-Wefaq had said earlier last week.
The opposition group called for the immediate release of Sheikh Isa and the prisoners of conscience in Bahrain and stressed respect of human rights.
Bahrain has been the scene of almost daily protests against the Al Khalifa regime since early 2011, when an uprising began in the Persian Gulf country.
Scores of Bahrainis have been killed and hundreds of others wounded and arrested in the ongoing crackdown on peaceful protests.
