Iran, Ghana Discuss Cooperation on Counterterrorism
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Foreign ministers of Iran and Ghana in a meeting explored avenues for the expansion of ties in different areas, such as Tehran’s help for the Africa nation to supply its energy demands and joint efforts in the fight against terrorism.
After the meeting in Tehran on Tuesday, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and his Ghanaian counterpart Hanna Tetteh held a joint press conference.
Zarif said in the press conference that Iran, as the president of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), attaches great significance to ties with African countries.
“We enjoy relations with Africa on the basis of mutual respect and shared interests,” he noted.
The top Iranian diplomat said he discussed a range of issues with Tetteh, including assistance the Iranian companies can provide for Ghana to meet its demands for electricity.
Cooperation in the fight against extremism and terrorism, which have plagued parts of the Middle East and Africa, were among the other topics discussed with Mrs. Tetteh, Zarif added.
He also said Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama is scheduled to visit Iran in the near future at the invitation of his Iranian counterpart.
For her part, Ghana’s visiting foreign minister congratulated Iran on striking a nuclear deal with major world powers, saying the agreement will contribute to international peace.
Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) on July 14 reached a conclusion on a lasting nuclear agreement that would terminate all sanctions imposed on Tehran over its nuclear energy program after coming into force.
The United Nations Security Council also adopted a resolution afterwards to endorse the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
