Iran A Key Int’l Player: Bulgarian Diplomat

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Bulgaria’s deputy foreign minister highlighted Iran’s significant role in the international scenes and in meeting the challenges the Middle East faces.

“As a major international player, the Islamic Republic of Iran can play a positive role” in the face of challenges in the region, Valentin Poriazov said in a meeting with Chairman of the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi in Tehran.

The visiting Bulgarian diplomat also called for collective efforts by the international community in order to fight off terrorist groups.

Poriazov said the spread of terrorism poses a threat to the security of all world countries.

For his part, Boroujerdi blamed a rise the in the acts of terrorism on certain countries that continue to fund, arm and train terrorist groups.

He also slammed a US-led military coalition against the ISIL terrorist groups as a mere “show”.

ISIL is a militant group operating in Iraq and Syria which is believed to be supported by the West and some regional Arab countries. The terrorist group claims as an independent state the territory of Iraq and Syria, with implied future claims intended over more of the Levant, including Lebanon, occupied Palestine, Jordan, Cyprus, and Southern Turkey.

The ISIL militants made advances in northern and western Iraq over summer 2014, after capturing swaths of northern Syria.

However, a combination of concentrated attacks by the Iraqi military and the volunteer forces, who rushed to take arms after top Iraqi cleric Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani issued a fatwa calling for fight against the militants, have blunted the edge of the ISIL offensive.
