Iran Urges IAEA’s Evenhanded Stance
TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Ali Akbar Salehi called on the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to take an impartial approach towards the country’s nuclear energy program.
Addressing an IAEA meeting in Vienna, Salehi reaffirmed Tehran’s commitment to implementing a comprehensive nuclear deal with major world powers and a roadmap it has signed with the UN nuclear watchdog.
He said Iran expects the IAEA to reach an impartial conclusion when it comes to verifying Tehran’s nuclear commitments.
The Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) and the IAEA should terminate the “unfair” sanctions against Iran as a reciprocal action in response to Tehran’s honoring of commitments under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and the roadmap signed with the IAEA, he added.
IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano and Salehi on July 14 signed a roadmap in Vienna to resolve all the past and present outstanding issues related to Tehran’s nuclear energy program.
On the same day, Iran and the Group 5+1 (alternatively known as the P5+1 or E3+3) finalized the text of the JCPOA, a lasting deal that would end more than a decade of impasse over Tehran’s nuclear program.
The IAEA has been given the role of verifying Iran’s commitments under the deal.
According the JCPOA, “The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will be requested to monitor and verify the voluntary nuclear-related measures as detailed in this JCPOA. The IAEA will be requested to provide regular updates to the Board of Governors, and as provided for in this JCPOA, to the UN Security Council. All relevant rules and regulations of the IAEA with regard to the protection of information will be fully observed by all parties involved.”
