Iran Dismisses UN Human Rights Report as Invalid
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokeswoman rejected a recent report by the UN chief on the human rights situation in Iran, saying it has been founded upon a resolution that is basically biased and lacks any legal credibility.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran has always insisted that the resolution, on the basis of which this report was drafted, has been adopted in favor of the political objectives of certain countries, and lacks legal credibility,” Marziyeh Afkham said Sunday, in response to a recent report presented by the UN secretary general to the 70th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Afkham explained that Ban’s report has in multiple cases cited biased sources, while Iran had already provided “firm and documented” answers to the draft version of the report.
“Nevertheless” she added “the final report has made an incorrect judgement about the human rights status in Iran and missed the opportunity for evenhanded evaluation and analysis.”
As regards other factors that have invalidated the report, Afkham pointed to its disregard for the harmful effects of the unilateral anti-Iran sanctions imposed under the pretext of the human rights issue, Iran’s progress in fields regarding women, the country’s fight against narcotics trafficking and relevant crimes, and the broad range of civil society and NGOs’ activities in Iran.
