Iranian Deputy FM, UN Envoy Discuss Syrian Crisis
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian held talks with UN Deputy Special Envoy for Syria Ramzy Ezzeldin Ramzy on the latest efforts to resolve the protracted crisis in the Arab country.
In the meeting held here in Tehran on Monday, the two diplomats exchanged views about the details of Iran’s peace plan and the proposal put forward by UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura to resolve the Syrian conflicts.
In his remarks, Amir Abdollahian cast doubts over the sincerity of the US-led coalition against ISIL terrorists in Syria, saying that Washington has not taken any serious action against terrorism in the war-hit country and continues its double standard approach.
He further stressed the need for serious efforts by all countries to combat terrorism in the Middle East, Syria in particular.
Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has proposed a four-point peace plan on the Syrian crisis. The initiative calls for a national unity government, a ceasefire, fighting terrorism and constitutional reforms in the violence-torn Arab nation, according to Zarif.
Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with Takfiri terrorists from various groups, including the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), currently controlling parts of it.
According to the United Nations, more than 240,000 people have been killed and one million wounded in the conflict.
In the meantime, Iran has remained a close ally of Syria and supports its legitimate government in the face of foreign-backed militancy.
Earlier on June 2, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani hailed the resistance of the Syrian government and people against foreign-backed terrorist groups in the Arab country, saying that Tehran is determined to side with Damascus to the end of the crisis.
