UK Parliament Votes for Joining Syria Airstrikes
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Britain’s Parliament voted in favor of joining airstrikes in Syria against Daesh (ISIL) targets despite public opposition.
The move proposed by Prime Minister David Cameron’s government was approved by a clear majority of 174 MPs, with 397 voting in favor and 223 voting against on Wednesday.
The vote in the House of Commons came after over 10 hours of often heated debate, AFP reported.
British planes – already operating against Daesh in neighboring Iraq – could now be poised to join airstrikes on militant targets in Syria within hours.
Cameron had wanted to expand Britain’s role in the fight against Daesh for months but made a fresh push for the vote in the wake of the Paris attacks last month.
Thousands of anti-war protesters took to the streets in London during the recent days to protest the proposed plans to join the airstrikes in Syria.
