UN Chief Welcomes JCPOA Implementation
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon hailed the implementation of Iran’s nuclear deal with six world powers as a “milestone that reflects good faith of all parties”.
“This is a significant milestone that reflects the good faith effort by all parties to fulfil their agreed commitments,” said Ban's spokesman in a statement late on Saturday, the official website of the UN reproted.
“This achievement demonstrates that international proliferation concerns are best addressed through dialogue and patient diplomacy. The Secretary-General hopes the success of this agreement contributes to greater regional and international cooperation for peace, security and stability in the region and beyond,” he added.
The spokesman further said that the UN will fully support the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) “in accordance with the relevant decisions of the Security Council, including resolution 2231 (2015).”
The UN statement came after International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) late on Saturday released a statement and confirmed Iran’s commitment to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action ( JCPOA).
Shortly after the IAEA announcement, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and European Union’s Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini announced in a joint statement that the implementation of a nuclear deal finalized by Tehran and world powers back in July 2015 has officially been started.
