Republicans Slam Obama over Termination of Iran’s Sanctions

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Hours after termination of anti-Tehran sanctions following confirmations from the UN’s nuclear watchdog that Tehran had fulfilled its obligations under last year’s nuclear accord, US Republicans lashed out at the Obama administration over the removal of the sanctions.

US Speaker of the House Paul Ryan vowed to do "everything possible" to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, CNN reported.

Meanwhile, New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez, said the US and international community should be focused on ensuring Iran is held accountable for the terms.

"With its announcement today, the (International Atomic Energy Agency) confirmed they could not determine the possible military dimensions of Iran's nuclear program," he said in a statement.

"With little known about Iran's true intent, we find ourselves today opening a floodgate of frozen assets to a regime that is bent on opposing our interests,” he added.

Shortly after the IAEA announcement, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and European Union’s Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini announced in a joint statement that the implementation of a nuclear deal finalized by Tehran and world powers back in July 2015 has officially been started.

The IAEA has time and again confirmed the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program.
