Chinese President Calls Tehran-Beijing Relations Age-Old, Friendly

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Chinese President Xi Jinping on Saturday said Tehran and Beijing enjoy long-established and friendly relations, adding that there are no fundamental disputes or problems between the two nations.

China and Iran have no fundamental conflicts, and there are only consistent mutual support and mutual benefit between them, President Jinping said on Saturday during a meeting with his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani here in Tehran.

Highlighting that Iran and China have had long-standing close ties, the Chinese president added there had been no wars or disputes between the two nations.

"The China-Iran friendship... has stood the test of the vicissitudes of the international landscape," Xi said.

Elsewhere in his remarks, he threw his country’s weight behind Iran’s permanent membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), Xinhua reported.

Xi Jinping arrived in Tehran Friday night for a state visit to Iran aimed at further boosting the traditional friendship and economic engagement between Iran and China.

During his visit, Iran and China signed 17 cooperation agreements and memorandums of understanding (MoUs) as part of efforts to boost bilateral relations between the two Asian countries in diverse political and economic fields.

His two-day visit comes a few days after West-led sanctions on Iran were lifted following the official start of implementation of nuclear deal signed in July 2015 between Iran and the Group 5+1 (the five permanent UN Security Council members plus Germany).

As a member of the G5+1 (also known as P5+1 or E3+3), China played a constructive role in the negotiations that led to the finalization of the deal.
