Thailand’s FM in Tehran for Talks

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Thai Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai arrived in the Iranian capital on Sunday at the head of a business delegation in a bid to expand the country’s trade ties with Iran.

Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai is heading a delegation of 50 businessmen and officials with Thai companies who want to identify the business opportunities in Iran.

The Thai foreign minister is scheduled to meet with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.

Back in February 2014, the director general of Thai Ministry of Commerce’s International Trade Development Center headed a delegation to Iran and discussed enhancement of economic ties between the two nations with senior Iranian officials.

Following the visit, Thailand and Iran decided to increase the level of their economic and trade relations to $1.2 billion in three years.

The total volume of mutual trade ties between the two countries stood at $600 million a year in the past, but fell to about $300 million in 2015 on lower oil prices.

The Thai FM’s Tehran visit has come after Iran and world powers announced on January 16 that the implementation of a nuclear deal they had finalized back in July 2015 has officially been started.

Based on the nuclear deal – known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) – all nuclear-related anti-Iran sanctions were removed.

Experts believe that Iran's economic growth would rise remarkably after the recent termination of sanctions.
